Expand your business by connecting with the right people

Not everyone finds networking easy but it is part of doing business. If done right, it can be a more cost- effective method of generating new business than advertising or public relations efforts. This is because business networking is a low-cost activity that involves more personal commitment than company money.

So if you are assisting a networking event for the first time or are not the mingling type, these tips can help you to get the most out of it!

  1. Know why you are there

Why are you going to this networking event? What do you want to accomplish? Is it to meet new people, hear the speakers, build new business relationships, or find referral sources? Each objective has a different approach, and if you can’t really answer those questions, is better to consider not going at all since it’s hard to be prepared and purpose-driven if you are not sure about what to say about your business.

So if you are clear about why you want to be there, make sure to bring your business cards and your best smile.

  1. Be there early and prepared

Nowadays it is easy to see online who is going to the event before you arrive, so you can take advantage of knowing who will be in the room to prepare and speak intelligently to them about their business. You can make notes of what you can do for the other person or how they might be a helpful relationship. If you don’t have access to an attendance list ahead of time, then arriving early lets you review the name tags and see who you would like to meet.

  1. Team up with a partner

It’s easier to get the most out of an event if you go with someone who can introduce you to other people, and it doesn’t hurt if you can be the one to introduce them.

  1. Scan the room and mingle

This can be the tricky part, and it requires some subtlety and good timing. Introduce yourself without being rude and speak up when an opening presents itself. People want to get to know you, but don’t be the one who doesn´t let the rest talk. Welcome others into your circle and always be positive. People will remember you if you are pleasant, polished and not too upbeat.

  1. Know what you are going to say

This is easier said than done, but it’s hard to be able to speak intelligently at an event in a loud room when the pressure to connect is on, so you can practice. Know beforehand why you’d want to meet someone.

Preparing ahead of time makes you more confident to do the job that you are meant to do: meeting new people and expanding your network.
