Tips and tricks to design a perfect business card

Within the first 10 seconds, your potential customer is building up a lasting opinion about you, and you only get one shot to make a great first impression. Here are some tips for generating a professional image in your card.

Size and Color Scheme

The most common card size is 84 mm x 55 mm, so the best document size to work on is 1039 x 697 pixels. Ensure to use images with at least 300 dpi for a high-quality result. Choosing colors that are aesthetically pleasing is a key player. And we highly recommend keeping your color scheme consistent throughout your media (website, facebook, email signature) to develop a professional image.

The Bleed area and border

Unless your design background color is white, specialists will prepare the Bleed area for your card design. Preparing the Bleed involves highlighting an area surrounding the document, usually 3 mm thick with the same color as the background color of your card design. So, the border strips won’t turn up on the edge of the cards.

Try to avoid using borders on your business card designs at all. Even though they may look good, when the cards are cut you will have some ‘lop-sided’ edges. In fact, printing experts will leave a margin of error for cutting your cards, expect some variance in the area where the blade falls.

Text and space

Text must be at least 8 pt., in a clear, readable font and in bold color. Anything smaller than 8 pt. may look fine on the monitor, but may be printed otherwise with an undesirable finish. If you want, you     can accentuate your name or relevant contact information by making it slightly bigger or bolder than the rest of your information. All text should go embedded or outlined, and any guidelines or color scheme blocks removed.

Content

Take into account that many businesses no longer include an address on their business cards, so if there is limited space, we recommend removing it from your design. Another great way to save some spaces is creating QR Codes as they provide an alternative way of including a lot of information, without making it look cluttered. Plus, it is an easy way to create a link between your printed and online content – people

can automatically be sent to your website by scanning the code.
